09 July 2019, TOORMINA, NSW, AUSTRALIA – The Phase 2 of the BusBot Trial is now underway at Marian Grove Retirement Village in Toormina, NSW, to test a more complex operating environment and also to test the ability of the EZ10 autonomous shuttle to address various mobility needs for the aged and less-mobile members of the retirement village. This is also a first time an on-demand autonomous shuttle service is being trialled in a retirement village.
Using the BusBot app, the residents will be able to hail the autonomous BusBot directly from their smartphone. The app will then direct passengers to a nearby virtual bus stop for pick up and drop off, and dynamically task the driverless vehicle to stops in real-time, allowing for quick and efficient shared trips without lengthy detours, or inconvenient fixed routes and schedules.
The trial is a NSW Government initiative, being led in partnership between Transport for NSW, local bus operator Busways, Coffs Harbour City Council, vehicle manufacturer EasyMile and US transport company Via.
