What’s it really like working at EasyMile? To find out, we sat down with one of our interns to share a look behind the scenes—highlighting how each team member contributes to building autonomous vehicle technology.

Meet Enrico: A Closer Look at the Detection Team

Enrico is a computer science student from Italy, currently completing a master’s degree focused on drones. He joined EasyMile’s Detection team, a group responsible for helping autonomous vehicles “see” the world through data.

At the core of their work is the transformation of raw sensor input—especially from LiDAR—into accurate, reliable information. This step is critical: it bridges the physical hardware (like sensors) with high-level functionalities such as localization, navigation, and safety decision-making.

From Raw Data to Driving Decisions

Enrico’s internship project focuses on LiDAR ground estimation algorithms. In simple terms, that means helping the vehicle detect the ground beneath it—on any type of terrain. Recognizing what is drivable and what is not is essential to ensuring both performance and safety.

To break it down visually:

  • Green points represent the ground (road or terrain)—safe to drive.

  • Red points indicate objects above the ground (like tree branches).

  • White points are in-between—objects within vehicle height that could present collision risks.

The goal is for the vehicle to understand its environment clearly and identify a safe path forward—the so-called “green zone.”

Innovation Through Collaboration

Though Enrico is an intern, his role is deeply integrated within the team. He collaborates with colleagues in localisation and sensor development, contributing to real-world projects. Despite language differences and being new to the company, he’s found an innovative and supportive environment.

“You hear about EasyMile from the outside, but once inside, you realize just how much innovation is happening every day. It’s exciting to be a part of it.”

His experience reflects the culture at EasyMile: a space where curiosity, collaboration, and impact-driven work come together—whether you're a full-time engineer or just starting out.

This is just one of many stories that show what working at EasyMile really looks like. More to come.
