EasyMile’s autonomous vehicle on Karragarra Island in Queensland is being called “the technology that’s set to change the way we travel.” It is the first-ever driverless service to connect with a public ferry terminal, and the first on-road trial of a driverless bus in the state.

6 December 2019, Australia – EasyMile’s Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Greg Giraud said the French company sees driverless mobility as the future for the region. “The Karragarra Island trial is a showcase of how autonomous vehicle technology can address public transport challenges, offering a much smoother service to people. It is the alternative to private fleets of vehicles as the new mobility solution.”

The six-month trial is a joint initiative between the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) and Redland City Council, with the support of Council of Mayors SEQ. It is operating on a 3.8 kilometre fixed loop route, co-ordinated with ferry arrivals where passengers can hop on or off at one of eight bus stops along the route.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael said the Club was proud to introduce Queenslanders to the next generation of motoring. “This trial will give us greater understanding of autonomous vehicles, their suitability to Australian driving conditions and how they interact with other road users,” Dr Michael said. “It’s a critical step in the broader process of integrating this technology more permanently on our roads in future.”

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the bus was a huge step forward. “This trial is the first-ever form of public transport for the Karragarra Island community which has some incredibly unique transport challenges that present a need for innovative solutions” Cr Williams said.
