Autonomous shuttles key to new public transportation in master-planned community

A neighborhood dedicated to smart mobility has set up the most advanced autonomous vehicle service in Sweden with EasyMile’s EZ10 shuttles

Public transport driverless shuttle service fully integrated in Sweden

Four EZ10 shuttles provide a mobility service within the residential area of Barkarbystaden, located in the Järfalla municipality, close to Stockholm in Sweden. It is the largest new property development in Northern Europe with 10,000 new households. The service is integrated within the transportation offering of SL (the Stockholm public transport authority) and is operated by Nobina, who are the leading public transport operator in the country. Passengers are required to purchase a ticket or validate their travel card to board the service.

The autonomous shuttles provide a first-last mile service, linking, the residential block to rapid bus transport links and a shopping area. The service has been operating since 2018, 6 days per week. The distance covered by the shuttles is expanding regularly.

Next steps for a service at the forefront of innovation in public transport

Project stakeholders intend to expand the service on a wider scale. Primarily, the aim is to introduce more vehicles covering greater distances. In addition, the objective is to integrate additional features, such as:

  • data from the vehicles in a third-party app, such as the Travis app, available locally; and
  • an on-demand service via a third-party app that will allow a customized service to residents and other passengers.

This vision will all be possible thanks to EasyMile’s application programming interface (API) which is built on top of the fleet management software EZFleet, provided with the autonomous shuttles.

A very strong dynamic with public transport within Barkarbystaden

The public autonomous vehicle’s aim is to improve the traffic situation and increase the use of public transport with seamless integration. Here are some key performance indicators (KPIs) measured at the end of 2019 which show the positive impact of the technology on the daily life of inhabitants:

  • Satisfaction with the traffic situation increased to 72%
  • Public transport market share increased to 67%
